A Far Cry

She can put her hand flat on a wall and tell you what is moving on the other side of it. Nobody taught her how, and nobody is ever going to explain it to her.
August 2005. Specialist Lisa Castillo comes down off a peak in the Chiricahuas with a dead man's book in her pack and something happening in her hands she has no word for. The book was her great-grandmother's. It sat wedged in the wall of a stone shelter for fifty years, a few feet from his bones.
Her grandfather is eighty-three and the only person left who can tell her anything. What he gives her is a box of letters and a diary in Spanish that ends before the part she needs. It gives her a sequence. It does not give her an answer.
The one man who sees what her hands can do, and never asks her how she knew, is the man she marries.
A year later she deploys, attached to a brigade that is not her own, in the worst year of that war. Her work is knowing things and never being able to say how she knows them. The men who own the road have owned it eight months. She has been there three weeks.
For readers of Helen Benedict's Sand Queen and Cara Hoffman's Be Safe I Love You, A Far Cry is a novel about being right and not being believed, and about what a woman inherits that no one can explain to her.
A Far Cry is Book Three of the Legacy's Child series.
